18th Asian Games Invitational Tournament 2018 | Boxing




18th Asian Games Invitational Tournament 2018 was a test event for 2018 Asian Games scheduled  from 11 Feb – 15 Feb 2018.

10 Indian boxers took part in Asian Games Test Event in 10 weight categories (Seven men & three women categories) & gave an incredible performance to grab 10 medals including 5 Golds, 1 Silver & 4 Bronze.

Indian boxers won 10 medals including 5 Gold , 1 Silver and 4 Bronze to Top Boxing Medal tally. 

Men’s Categories

  • Men’s 49 kg

Shyam Kumar fighting in 49 kg category clinched India’s first Gold medal by defeating KALI Mario of Indonesian in one-sided battle by 4-1. Earlier, he got a walkover from Muhamad Fuad (Malaysia) in the semi-finals. In the last 8 stage, he got the better of SAEHAN Samak (Thailand) in a close contest by 3-2.

  • Men’s 52 kg

Salman Shaikh, another bright prospect for Indian boxing team won the second Gold for the nation after beating Philippines’s LADON Ragon by an unanimous decision 5-0.  It proved out to be pure dominance from the Indian boxer who grabbed the first position without much fight from the opponent. Salman had a tough encounter in the semi-finals where he defeated BABA Ryusei from Japan in a close call by 3-2. He had a BYE till semi-final stage.

  • Men’s 56 kg

Etash Muhammed (56kg) lost his semi-final’s bout to Tonhdee Yuttapong of Thailand by an unanimous decision 0-5 & settled for bronze. Earlier he got a bye till the quarter-final stage.

  • Men’s 60 kg

Manish kaushik was flawless in his all fights as he won both his semi-final & final bouts by 5-0 which proved out to be a one-sided affair everytime. In the Gold-medal playoff Manish got the better of his Japanese boxer KIMURA Rentaro while in the semi-finals Indian beat LAI Chu-En from Chinese Taipei easily by 5-0.

  • Men’s 64 kg

Ashish, another Indian boxer who remain unbeatable through out the tournament grabbed the fourth Gold for the country. This time another Philippines’s boxer was defeated by the Indian, that too in an unanimous decision 5-0.

Earlier, Manish defeated GHA Libertus from Indonesia & NARIMATSU from Japan in Quarter-final & semi-final stage respectively.

  • Men’s 69 kg

Pawan kumar fighting in 69 Kg Men  lost his “last 4” match to Saylom ARDEE in a close encounter by 2-3 & won second bronze for India.

  • Men’s 75 kg 

Ashish Kumar (75 kg) lost to his Chinese Taipei’s opponent Chia-Wei by an unanimous decision 0-5 in the semi-finals.

Women Categories

  • Women’s 51 kg

    Ritu Grewal fighting in women’s 51 Kg category lost her match to W. Thanthip of Thailand by 2-3 & clinched the bronze medal.

  • Women’s 57 kg

Shashi Chopra was the lone Indian who lost his or her final match & settled for Silver. It was a tough bout for the Indian boxer who lost easily by R.SAOTO of Thailand in an unanimous decision 0-5.

In the semi-final stage, she got the better of Indonesian boxer PASUIT Riza by 4-1 while in Quarter-finals, her opponent MOHD FAIZAL of Singapore had no answers to the Indian dominance as Shashi won it easily by 5-0.

  • Women’s 60 kg

Not only men, there was an Indian women too who looked flawless & just unbeatable in her weight category as India’s Pavitra made sure that the Indian anthem do get play for the record fifth time in the boxing arena. She easily beat Techasuep Nilawan of Thailand by 5-0 to clinch the Gold medal.

Till the semi-final stage she got a BYE & defeated HWANG Hyejung of korea in the Last 4 stage, that too 5-0.

Conclusion

Though, India topped the medal tally with 10 medals, still there was no tough competition at all for the boxers & many famous Indian boxers were too missing from the Invitational tournament.

Still, this performance will give some good exposure to young Indian boxers & will boost the morale of Indian boxing contingent who will be tested in the big tournaments like Commonwealth Games 2018, Gold Coast, Australia & Asian Games 2018, Indonesia.
