India at ITTF Challenge, Belgium Open

2017 ITTF Challenge Belgium Open was held from Tuesday 31st October to Saturday 4th November at De Haan, Belguim & a strong 10-member Indian contingent represented the nation for the ITTF Challenge tournament.

It turned out to be a mediocre performance from the Indian team as only one pair was able to make it to the semi-finals while others failed to put any strong impact.

  • Men’s Singles :

Sanil SHETTY turned out to be the most successful single player in the tournament for India as he reached the quarter-final stage where he was beaten by Walther Ricardo of Germany quite comfortably by 1-4. Earlier, he defeated Cheng-Ting (Chinese Taipei), Platonov Pavel (Belarus) & QIU Dang (Germany) in previous encounters.

India’s one of the most successful table tennis player ACHANTA Sharath Kamal failed to impress as he lost his singles tie to Aguirre Marcelo (PAR) in a close encounter by 3-4. In the round of 64, he got the better of RUMGAY Gavin of Scotland

Sathiyan GNANASEKARAN lost his round of 32 battle to Swedish player BRODD Viktor by 2-4.

  • Women’s Singles :

Manika BATRA looked quite flaw less in the tournament but went down to korean girl LEE Zion by 1-4. Earlier, she defeated her team mate Mouma DAS in an “All Indian affair” by 4-1 while got the better of MIGOT Marie from France in the first round.

Sreeja AKULA & Pooja SAHASRABUDHE lost their first round matches to JEGER Mateja (Croatia) & LEE Zion (Korea) respectively.

  • Men’s Doubles :

G.Sathiyan / Sharath Kamal were the bright prospects form Indian team in this tournament as the pair made it to the semi-finals before losing out in an intense encounter to German pair of Franziska/Walther by 2-3. In quarter-final stage Indian duo defeated the Swedish pair of ANDERSSON Harald / ARVIDSSON Simon in one sided matchy 3-0.

Sarthak GANDHI / Sanil SHETTY, lost their first round clash of the men’s doubles tie to Russian pair of ISMAILOV Sadi /IVONIN Denis quite easily by 0-3.

  • Women’s Doubles :

Manika BATRA / Mouma DAS lost their quarterfinal rubber to Hsien-Tzu / Hsing-Yin of Chinese Taipei by 1-3. In the first round, Indian got the better of another Taipei’s pair of Yu-Wen / Yu-Jhun.

Mallika BHANDARKAR / Frenaz CHIPIA knocked out of the tournament after losing out to DE Sarah (LUX) / WAN Yuan (GER) by 0-3.
