World Rowing Junior Championship 2017 Trakai, Lithuania

The 51st edition of World Rowing Junior Championships 2017 were held from 2 to 6 August 2017 at the Trakai Rowing Centre in Trakai, Lithuania.

16 rowers from India participated in the Junior Championships in six different events.

  • Men’s Single Sculls :

The lone Indian participating in men’s single sculls event, Ashish Phugat finished third in his respective heat with the timings of 07:27.640. He got another chance in repechage, where he failed to improve & finished fourth with 07:44.890 on the clock.

Ashish failed to qualify for the semi-final & final round.

  • Women’s Single Sculls :

Yamini Singh, the only Indian girl in single sculls concluded her heat on fifth position with the timings of 08:29.380. In repechage, she finished third but her timings got poor (08:52.500), she did not advance to semi-final & final round too.

  • Men’s Pair :

India participating in World Rowing Junior Championship

Akshat and Lucky failed to impress in their respective category too as they finished fifth during the heat with 7:11:700 on the clock. Their timings were improved in repechage round (7:04) but it was not so good to give them a semi-final berth in men’s pair category of World Rowing Junior Championships.

  • Men’s Four :

Indian team consisting of Sai Raju, Punil Singh, Neeraj & Nikhil finished on 4th position in heats (06:28.190). Their timings fell by more three seconds in repechage round which knocked them out of the competition.

  • Women’s Four :

Indian women team comprising of Kamala Lakra, Jothi Tamdu, Sumitra Mallick and Ritu kaudi failed to impress too as they were crashed out of the tournament after finishing sixth in repechage round with the timings of 7:50.

Earlier, the team finished sixth in heats too with 07:58.210 on the clock.

  • Women’s Quadruple Sculls :

The only bright spot for India at World Junior Rowing Championships 2017 was the Women’s Quadruple Sculls event, where the team consisted of Hemalatha, Deepika Xess, Rashma kumari & Geetanjali qualified for the semi-finals.

The team finished 3rd in the heats with the timings of 07:56.570 & directly qualified for the last 4 stage. However, the team improved with the timings by nearly 12 seconds but this was only good to give them a sixth position in the semifinals.

Author’s View :

It was a quite disappointing championships for India as no one was able to make it to the finals, but given the fact India has no history in the sport of rowing, the World Junior Championships act as a good exposure to Indian rowers.
