What a Day for Indian badminton !! Srikanth has created History by winning his second consecutive title in two weeks by beating Former World no.1 Chen Long at Australian Open Super Series !
Kidambi Srikanth, who has been in stupendous form took on Olympic & World Champion Chen Long of China,in his third Superseries final in a row.
By getting into his third consecutive final, he also became just the sixth man in history to achieve this feat, joining the likes of Lin Dan, Lee Chong Wei, Bao Chunlai, Sony Dwi Kuncoro and his final opponent, Chen Long himself.
With the Australian Open Title, kidambi also becomes the first singles player in the World to win both Indonesian Open & Australain Open Super Series in two back to back weeks.
Coming into the contest, Chen Long had a upper hand on Indonesian Open Champion Kidambi as Long, currently ranked 6th, leads the head-to-head record over the World No. 11 Srikanth, 5-0 & only once was the Indian able to take a game off the Chinese.
But this time Kidambi had other plans in his mind as he destroy the challenge of World Champion in straight sets by 22-20, 21-16 to write his name in the History.
The opening game began with nothing to choose between the two shuttlers. as both Chen & kidambi moved neck to neck giving no easy points to the opposition. But it was kidambi who broke the deadlock & move ahead to lead Olympic Champion by 11-9 at the break.
Chinese came back strongly after the break & score three back to back points to get into lead by 12-11. But from there, Srikanth raised his game to a whole new level, showing tremendous court coverage to come back from 17-19 down to take the game by 22-20.
Game 2 saw kidambi got underway with early lead by 6-2 but the Chinese came back strongly by scoring 5 back to back points to take the lead by 7-6.
Srikanth bagged some points after that to lead the Chinese by 11-9 at the break, after the break kidambi look invincible & smashed some good points & put Olympic Champion & Former World no. 1 on back foot to take the match by 22-20, 21-16.
Apart from defeating the World & Olympic Champion in the final, he also defeated current World no.1 In his road to final of Australian Open Super Series.
