Indian doubles pair of Leander Paes and Purav Raja has reached the pre-quarters of men’s doubles stage after upsetting 5th seeds Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares in Australian Open 2018.

The unseeded Indian pair defeated English-Brazilian duo by 7-6 (3), 5-7, 7-6 (6) in a thrilling contest which lasted two hours, 54 minutes.

Left-handed Murray, world number 9 in doubles and Soares, number 10, were huge favorites for the match as their performance in 2017 was absolute brilliant & consistent but Purav Raja with his significant net play changed the fortunes for Indian duo.

In the first set, it was difficult to separate both the pairs. Both teams won two break points each – two of four for Murray/Soares and two of seven for Paes/Raja – to go into a tiebreak, where Paes/Raja get into the advantage & eventually won the set.


Second set proved to be same with both the pairs fighting neck to neck but a crucial break towards the end, helped Murray and Soares take the second set 7-5.

After spitting the first two sets, decider proved to be a lot exciting as both pairs Murray/Soares and Paes/Raja were locked at 5-5 in the tie-breaker when Murray won his side a match point on his second serve.

Raja came for the rescue & not only saved the match point but also earned a match point for the Indians with excellent hands at the net. Indian pair converted the match point in first time of asking & sealed the match to book their place in pre-quarters of Australian Open 2018.
