Olympic silver medalist PV Sindhu is off to flying start by winning the opener but Kidambi Srikanth lost his first match here at $1 million BWF Dubai Finals on Wednesday.
The 22-year-old Sindhu, who enjoy a 4-5 head-to-head record against World No. 9 Chinese He Bingjiao had to work hard to overcome the left-handed Chinese 21-11, 16-21, 21-18 in a Group A match that lasted for an hour or more.
World No. 4 Srikanth, however, was not so lucky & went down by 13-21, 17-21 loss to World No. 1 and defending champion in a Group B men’s singles match of BWF Dubai World Superseries Finals that lasted for less than 40 minutes.
Sindhu has faced He Bingjiao twice in the year & knew the weak points of the Chinese. She engaged her in the long rallies & won the close net calls.
The Indian started the proceedings on a high note & led her Chinese opponent by 10-6 in the break. She quickly moved ahead by 17-8 when Bingjiao committed a judgemental error at the baseline & then went on to win the game by 21-11.
In the second game, Bingjiao rushed to 4-0 lead early lead & capitalized on it to turn the tables in her favor by winning the second set by 21-16
In the decider, it was Bingjiao who got the initial lead by 4-2 but Sindhu crawl back to level the things by 5-5. Soon Indian got the comfortable lead of 11-7 but Bingjiao continued to breath down Sindhu’s neck with her attacking game, narrowing the deficit to 16-17 after the interval. But Indian kept her nerves cool & took the first match of BWF Dubai World Superseries Finals 2017 by 21-11, 16-21, 21-18.
In the men’s singles match, Srikanth seemed to be off-color against the World Champion Victor Axelson & lost the match in straight sets.
Srikanth, who had snapped a three-match losing streak against the Dane with a win at the quarterfinals of Denmark Open, started the proceedings well & got to a lead at 10-7.
However, attacking Axelson turn the tables & clinched the first game by 21-13.
Axelsen continued to rule the roost in the second game too & get into initial lead by 5-1, he continued to carry his momentum & won the match by 21-13, 21-17.
In the second match of BWF Dubai World Superseries Finals, Sindhu will face Japan’s Sayaka Sato, while Srikanth will take on Chinese Taipei’s Chou Tien Chen on Thursday.
