Indian table tennis has just seen a new star in the making, Manika Batra defeated World no.4 and Olympic medalist Feng Tianwei for the second time of Commonwealth Games 2018.
Manika Batra who had a great hand in scripting history for India after winning the women’s team gold medal for the first time ever, continue her great form in the women’s singles too and defeated huge favorite and no.1 seed T. Feng of Singapore in a thrilling encounter by 4-3 (12-10, 5-11, 11-8, 5-11, 5-11, 11-9, 13-11) to qualify for the finals.
This would be the first time in Commonwealth history when an Indian would be playing in the finals of women’s singles event, that is a remarkable result for Indian table tennis.
She will take on another Singaporean in the finals, the 3rd seed in the competition, Yu Mengyu who defeated Canada’s Zhang Mo by 4-1 quite easily.
Yu Mengyu is ranked 23rd in the world and will be hot favorite to take the gold on papers but looking at the form of Indian girl and the confidence she is showing, it promises to be a thrilling gold medal match.
The match is scheduled to be held at 2:30 PM IST.
World no. 58 Manika has already assured herself the 3rd medal of the CWG 2018, a gold in team’s event, silver in women’s doubles and atleast a silver in singles too.
However, it was a heartbreak for Indian mixed doubles pair of Achanta Sharath Kamal/Mauma Das who lost their respective match to Singapore’s Yu Mengyu/Gao Ning by 2-3.
Sathiyan Gnanasekaran/Mainka Batra too failed to make it into the gold medal round after losing their match to England’s duo of Tin-Tin Ho/ Liam Pitchford in a close encounter by 2-3.
Yesterday, Manika Batra and Mouma Das fell at the final hurdle of the women’s doubles and settled for silver medal.
