India has started their shooting campaign with a bang after grabbing gold and silver medal in women’s 10m pistol event of Commonwealth Games 2018, Gold Coast, Australia.
16-year old star Manu Bhaker smashed CWG qualification record and finals record to clinch the sixth gold medal for the nation while former World no.1 Heena Sidhu escaped the elimination many times to ensure India’s second silver medal and ninth medal overall in these Commonwealth Games.
Manu, who became the youngest Indian to win a gold medal at the ISSF World Cup this year, scored a total of 388 points to smash the previous Games Record and finish the qualifications on top, followed by another Indian Heena Sidhu who scored 379 points.
In the finals, alot was expected from both shooters and Manu, who came into the competition on the back of medal wins at ISSF Junior and Senior World Cups, started her CWG finals on high with some extra-ordinary shooting and there was no pressure to be seen on the young lady.
She finished the finals with the score of 240.9, which was also a new Games Record.
On the other hand, experienced Heena Sidhu scored some back to back 9’s in the initial stage of the event and was on the urge of eliminating thrice in the competition but she held her nerves and backfired some good shots to take the 2nd position eventually behind Manu Bhaker.
Heena scored 234.0 points in the final, 6.9 behind Manu’s record-breaking performance.
India has already won a Gold medal in weightlifting today and this Gold and Silver in shooting has bring them right back on the 3rd position of medal tally with 9 medals (6 Gold, 2 Silver and a bronze) behind Australia and England.
Meanwhile, India’s Ravi kumar and Deepak kumar will participate in men’s 10m air rifle finals at 9AM (IST). Deepak has already broken the qualifying games record by scoring 627.2 points.
