India had a historical day 5 as Indian badminton team and men’s table tennis team scripted history for the country by winning gold medals in Commonwealth Games 2018, Australia.
On Day 5 of the Games, India bagged 7 medals including 3 Gold, 2 Silver and 2 Bronze taking the Indian medal tally up to 19 overall (10 Gold, 4 Silver and 5 Bronze).
Pradeep Singh won the first medal (Silver) of the day in men’s 105 kg category weightlifting by successfully lifting 352kg (152 kg in Snatch and 200kg in Clean and Jerk). He almost pulled off a Gold medal but a decision of 2:1 in favor of him was overruled and he had to settle for silver medal only.
In shooting, former world no.1 Jitu Rai smashed the CWG Record to win India another gold medal in shooting with a total of 235.1 points in the final after qualifying at fifth place. His team mate Om Mitharwal with 214.3 clinched the bronze for India.
Few moments later, 17 year old Mehuli bagged another silver for India in women’s 10m air rifle event after smashing games record with the score of 432.2 in qualifications. Mehuli and Singapore’s Martina Lindsay finished the finals on same scores and got engaged in a shoot-off where Veloso’s final shot was worth 10.3, while Mehuli’s was 9.9.
Apurvi Chandela, gold medalist from Glasgow Commonwealth Games clinched the bronze medal.
Later in the day, Indian men’s table tennis team dominated Nigeria to win second gold for India in table tennis event in CWG 2018. Following the women’s footsteps Indian men defeated the defending champions Singapore in the semis of the team event.
Also, Indian badminton mixed team scripted history after winning the gold medal for the very first time in the history of CWG in team event. The team crushed 3 times defending champions, Malaysia by 3-1.
In the medal tally, India is well placed right now on 3rd position, behind Australia and England.
