India opened their account on Day 7 of the Commonwealth Games 2018 with a bronze medal in 50m men’s pistol event here in Gold Coast, Australia.
Om Mitharval, who also grabbed a bronze in men’s 10m pistol event, shot 201.1 in the finals to finish third in the eight-man finals at Belmont Shooting Centre.
However, defending champion Jitu Rai, who won a gold medal in this event at 2014 Commonwealth Games Glasgow failed miserably in the finals managed only 105.0 to finish at 8th position in the finals.
Alot was expected from him as he already won the gold in men’s 10m air pistol event in CWG 2018 but alots of 7’s and 8’s eliminate him out of the competition quickly.
Host nation Australia’s Daniel Repacholi clinched the gold medal in the event with a Games record of 227.2 while Shakil Ahmed of Bangladesh took the silver with 220.5.
Mitharval, who jumped to the top spot after the first round with 93.7 maintained his lead after next two shots but Repacholi went ahead by a point after two more attempts.
Then the Indian found him on the silver medal position with 148.3 following scores of 9.8 and 8.6, before a 10.2 and 10.0 placed him level with the home favorite.
But a few bad shots in the end 7.2 and 7.6, totally take him out of the competition and Mitharval settled for a second bronze medal in this CWG 2018.
Meanwhile, 5 Time World Champion Mary kom knocked out his Sri Lankan opponent to qualify for the “Gold medal bout” in women’s 48kg category.
