Three Indian wrestlers, Sushil kumar, Rahul Aware and Babita kumari will play for the gold medal in their respective categories of Commonwealth Games 2018, Australia.
Double Olympic medalist and defending champion Sushil kumar will be up against South Africa’s Johannes Botha in the men’s 74kg category while Rahul Aware take on Canada’s Steven Takahasi in men’s 57kg freestyle to wrestle for Gold medal.
Wrestling medal bouts is scheduled to start from 12:30 PM (IST), 12th April.
Babita kumari, who won the Gold in 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, will have a tough match ahead against Canada’s Diana Weicker in women’s 53kg Nordic.
(Nordic is much like a round-robin system where a wrestler plays with all of her opponents and whosoever remains on the top of the group, wins the gold, followed by silver and bronze medal).
Babita has grabbed 13 points till now by defeating Bose Samuel (Nigeria) by 2-1, Dipika Dilhani (Sri Lanka) and Carissa Holland (Australia) by pin down while her opponent, Diana won her all matches with technical superiority to stay on the 2nd position with 12 points.
Indian wrestling star Sushil kumar also looked in a great shape after winning three one-sided bouts at the Carrara Sports Arena. In the first match, he overpowered Jevon Balfour of Canada by technical superiority while in the quarter-final, he routed Pakistan’s Muhammad Butt.
He booked his place in the final by defeating Australia’s Connor Evans by a pin and ensured himself of a medal in men’s 74kg freestyle category.
Also, competing in the gold medal match will be 4-times National Champion Rahul Aware who defeated Muhammad Bilal of Pakistan in the semis with a 12-8 points verdict after getting past George Ramm of England and Thomas Cicchini of Australia in the first two rounds.
