Ramkumar Ramanathan entered the main draw of the Cincinnati Open as the lucky loser after Gael Monfils pulled out of the ATP 1000 masters event due to illness.
Ramkumar had lost 7-6(6), 7-6(2) to Maximilian Marterer of Germany in the second and final qualifying round of the $5,244,930 ATP tournament.
In the first round, he had registered a huge upset win over the fourth seed and World No. 68 Dusan Lajovic, 7-6(1), 6-4.
The 180th ranked Indian will now take on the 21-year-old qualifier Christopher Eubanks of the USA, who is placed 194 spots below Ramanathan.
Ramkumar is the only Indian playing in the singles section of the 2017 Cincinnati Masters.
In the process, Ramanathan becomes first Indian to play in the main draw of ATP 1000 since Somdev Devvarman played Miami Open in 2013.
In the $25,000 ITF women’s tournament in Thailand, Karman Kaur Thandi made the pre-quarterfinals, while she was joined in the main draw by Pranjala Yadlapalli and Natasha Palha.
In the ITF men’s Futures in Spain, Arjun Kadhe and Anurag Nenwani entered the main draw and joined Aryan Goveas and Dhruv Sunish.
