Haas driver Romain Grosjean predicts McLaren will move up the F1 standings and threaten Red Bull next year (2018 season).
The British manufacturer is the second oldest active outfit after Ferrari & one of the well known teams in the sport. McLaren have been going through a rough patch the past 2-3 years with Honda. But now, with Renault onboard, Grosjean predicts a McLaren-Red Bull battle in 2018.
McLaren is nowhere to be seen on the top in recent years. In 2008, McLaren won the title after Lewis Hamilton won the title from Felipe Massa. Since then, the nine titles have been split between Mercedes (four), Red Bull (four) and Brawn.
However, Grosjean is confident about the team’s performance for next year & believes that they can use their resources to their advantage in their 2018 Formula1 campaign.
Grosjean said, “Some teams are going to maybe have a less powerful power unit so one goes up one goes down. “I think the best [approach] is to do our own work; we know where to improve, there’s a few areas where we really need to focus on to get better. [We need to be] making sure the updates – when they’re coming – are working and they have been well validated before. [That would mean] we’re not losing three months of time to bring something that actually doesn’t bring what it’s supposed to do, so that’s an area, just an example. McLaren is going to be super strong next year and they have huge resources, probably the biggest factory in Formula 1.”
The Frenchman said that Renault had a decent engine but also admitted the had reliability issues and will come stronger next season. Grosjean continued Renauld had a decent year & their development rate has been impressive and they are already ahead of Haas. Haas’ focus is on Force India, Williams and Toro Rosso with their new power unit. The 2018 F1 season kicks off with the Australian Grand Prix next March.
It will be interesting to see Grosjean’s prediction will come true & how McLaren integration with Renault will move in 2018 season.
