According to The Liverpool Echo reports, the £75million centre-back has been hampered by a tight hamstring and is unlikely to be risked against the leaders (Manchester City).
As a result Dejan Lovren is expected to be substituted by Jurgen Klopp to start alongside Joel Matip against City.
Van Dijk’s absence represents a major blow for the Reds as they wanted to ruin the unbeaten run of Manchester City.
The Netherlands international enjoyed a dream debut for the club following his January move from Southampton when he nodded home a late winner in the FA Cup tie against Everton at Anfield last week.
He made his debut for klopp’s side last Friday and scored the late winner in the 2-1 victory over Everton in the FA Cup third round.
City haven’t won at Anfield for 15 years but they will arrive on a high having established a 15-point lead at the top of the table.
The Sunday evening fixture will present one of the toughest matches for the blues this season; given the impressive record that Jurgen Klopp’s men have on their home ground.
Liverpool are looking for revenge against Pep Guardiola’s side after suffering a 5-0 defeat at the Etihad Stadium in September.
