India storms into final of “Four Nations Invitational Hockey Tournament”

Indian Hockey Team thrashed the hosts New Zealand by 3-1 to reach the finals of “Four Nations Invitational Hockey Tournament” at Blake Park, Tauranga on Saturday.

India will now take on the in form Belgium team in the finals who defeated Japan by 4-1 in their last group stage match.

After their 0-2 loss in the previous match against Belgium, India started the proceedings well & stay composed throughout the match.

India drew the first blood in second minute of the match after Harmanpreet scored a brilliant penalty corner to make it 1-0 for the Blues. Early goal put the Blackcaps on the backfoot.

The next few minutes saw India building up their defence with Rupinder Pal Singh, who was rested for the match against Belgium, leading the charge of defenders & not allowing New Zealand any kind of movement inside the circle.

Dilpreet with his brilliant slice put the ball past the New Zealand goal post in the 21st minute to double the Indian lead over Black sticks.

Trailing India by 0-2 for most of the time, New Zealand started to push the things forward & started to build pressure on Indian defence. They also got rewarded for their continuous pressure as Russell(45′) scored the opening goal for his team through penalty corner to decrease the gap by 1-2.

However, Mandeep Singh with his excellent goal in the 47th minute destroyed all New Zealand’s hopes of a late comeback & India recorded their second victory in three games to enter finals of Four Nations Invitational Hockey Tournament.

Indian hockey team started the tournament with a brilliant win over Japan by 6-0. However they lost the next match to Belgium by 0-2 but ended the group stage on high after thrashing New Zealand by 3-1.

India will be up against Belgium in the Final on 21st Jan (6:30 AM IST).
