India at ISSF Junior World Cup 2017

Shapath Bhardwaj in ISSF Junior World Cup

Indian junior shooters were only able to clinch one bronze medal in the ISSF Junior World Cup 2017, that too in double trap category which is excluded from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

A total of 22 shooters represented India (15 boys and 7 girls) and only two two of the young shooters progressed into their respective finals, Akash Saharan in men’s Trap where he finished 6th in the finals and Shapath Bhardwaj in men’s double trap where he grabbed the only medal for the country.

  • Trap women

Indian women had a bad day at office, as neither of the 5 could make it to finals, Best scores
being Nivetha N. and Soumya Gupta who finished 12 th in qualification after a score of 56/75. Other
shooters Manisha keer(53/75) and Kirti Gupta (51/75) finished 23 rd and 32 nd respectively.

  • Trap men

In the men’s category, Akash Saharan was the lone warrior who went on to finals after finishing
2 nd in qualifications (114/125) but failed to impress in finals (17/25) and finished 6 th .

  • Double Trap

It was not all gloomy as India won a bronze medal when Shapath Bharadwaj scored 48/60 in
finals. Earlier he had finished 2 nd in qualifications with score of 131/150. Rest shooters failed to
qualify for finals as the 2 nd best Indian shooter in double trap was Rizvi ahvar who could manage
to score 124/150 and finished 7 th .

  • Skeet women

In the women skeet event, Areeba khan, Ganemat Sekhon & Simranpreet Kaur took part and
failed to qualify as they finished 15 th , 17 th , 26 th respectively. Scores being -61/75, 60/75, 53/75
respectively.

  • Skeet men

A total of 5 shooters represented India in Skeet men. As the results of day 1 stands – Anant jeet
singh 114/125. Hamza sheikh 109/125. Arjun Singh 108/125. Abinash Pratap Singh & Gurnihal
Singh 101/125.

It turned out to be a decent outing for young Indian shooters but much was expected from them looking at their capabilities, Shapath Bhardwaj is a talent to watch in future competitions and this Junior World Cup will play as a huge exposure to the young athletes.
