India in Judo World Championship 2017 Budapest

Judo World Championship 2017 was held in Budapest between 28 August and 3 September 2017 at László Papp Budapest Sports Arena in Budapest, Hungary.

Five Indian judo players (2 men and 3 women) participated in the event but none of them was able to make a solid impact as only one player was able to win a bout in whole championship.

  • Men’s 60kg:

Vijay kumar Yadav participating in men’s 60 kg category lost his first round match to Iran’s M.Rashnonezhad by 1-0. Naohisa Takato of Japan won the Gold medal while silver medal went to Orkhan Safarov of Azerbaijan, Ganbatyn Boldbaatar (Mangolia) and Diyorbek Urozboev (Uzbekistan) grabbed the bronze medal.

  • Men’s 90kg:

Avtar Singh in World Judo Championship 2017

The only Indian judoka who qualified for Rio Summer Olympics 2016, Avtar Singh failed to impress too in World Championship, after getting a BYE in first round he was defeated by Marc Odenthal by 00-11 in the second round.

Gold of this middleweight category went to Nemanja Majdov of Serbia, Mihael Žgank from Slovenia took the silver while bronze was clinched by Gwak Dong-han (South korea) and Ushangi Margiani (Georgia).

  • Women’s 52kg:

Kalpana Devi was the only Indian to win a match in the whole championship as she knocked out Djamila Silva from Cape Verde by 10-00 in the first round. However, in the next round kalpana was defeated by Russia’s Yulia Kazarina in a one sided-affair by 00-10.

Gold and Silver both medals went to Japan’s Ai Shishime and Natsumi Tsunoda respectively while bronze medal was won by Natalia Kuziutina (Russia) and Érika Miranda (Brazil).

  • Women’s 63kg:

Participating in half-middleweight category, Sunibala Huidrom Devi, was knocked out in the first round only by Mongolia’s Mungunchimeg Baldorj who went on to win the bronze medal. Clarisse Agbegnenou from France took gold medal to her name while silver medal was clinched by Tina Trstenjak (Slovenia).

  • Women’s +78kg:

Tulika Maan, participating in heavyweight category lost the second round match to Russia’s Ksenia Chibisova by 00-12 after getting BYE in first round. China’s Yu Song won the gold after defeating Sarah Asahina (Japan) in the final. Kim Min-jeong (South korea) and Iryna Kindzerska (Azerbaijan) won the bronze medals.
