Man City boss Pep Guardiola: Players believe in my philosophy

Man City boss Pep Guardiola: Players believe in my philosophy

Raheem Sterling’s fortuitous winner at Huddersfield was the fifth time this season City have scored a decisive late goal.

And Guardiola believes that is because his players believe in what they are doing and know that more often than not their approach will come good for them.

Guardiola was urged on occasions last season to adopt a more pragmatic style but he has always refused to change his total football philosophy.

And as City prepare to register a 19th consecutive win in all competitions when they take on Southampton at the Etihad, Guardiola believes his determination to stay true to his convictions is now paying off.

He said: “It’s good – there is no panic. It happens because the players believe in what they do. And the result on Sunday helps them believe even more. Winning games in a row helps the belief in what we are trying to do.

“I cannot change something I don’t believe. The principle is we are here because we believe in something. When it happens, maybe you are convinced. Life is like that. People think managers just arrive and it works [overnight] but it’s not always like that.”

Meanwhile, Guardiola has told Eliaquim Mangala he can still have a future at the Etihad.

The French defender has been frozen out this season after falling down the pecking order.

He turned down several clubs in the summer and with John Stones now out for six weeks with a damaged hamstring, Mangala could get a surprise chance to impress.

Guardiola added: “I’m impressed with his behaviour in the training sessions. He is someone with a lot of experience and also with the national team in France

“He has specific qualities and I am going to use him. So he needs to keep working hard.

“He’s a player for us. He’s going to stay here.”

Mangala could start his first Premier League game of the season if Guardiola decides against playing injury-prone skipper Vincent Kompany twice in five days.

John stones is still out with a hamstring injury.
