According to reports, Manchester City are set to place £60m deal for Southampton’s defender Virgil van Dijk.
Liverpool & Barcelona are the two other giant clubs showing interest in the Dutch defender but City is now leading the race & could place a mega deal next month.
According to the Telegraph, Virgil van Dijk is now the main priority of Pep Guardio in the January transfer window, even though the 26-year-old is under contract until 2022 with the Saints.
Having started out at Groningen before really coming to prominence at Celtic, Van Dijk made the step up to the Premier League with Southampton in 2015, with the fee at that time said to be around £13 million.
It is known, that the 26-year-old Dutch defender will not be the first choice for City should the move go through as he would have to challenge the styles of John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi to get into the starting line-up.
Principally, Guardiola feels Van Dijk’s playing style and attributes would chime with City’s approach although the Dutchman, at 6ft 4in tall, would also bring extra height and physicality to the side.
With Vincent Kompany’s continuous injuries and Eliaquim Mangala patchy runs of form, City is working to build their defense.
Although they’ve only conceded three goals in their last five Premier League games, it’s plain to see that Guardiola needs another world-class asset at centre-back for his side to genuinely have no weak link.
Van Dijk played his last game against Huddersfield on Saturday where he was dropped for the 1-1 draw.
Southampton will travel to Tottenham in the Premier League’s opening Boxing Day game while Manchester City all set to play Newcastle.
