In an interview with La, Tercera, Mats Wilander had something shocking to say about Double Olympic Champion Andy Murray.
Asked how his career would have been if he had played with the Big Four players, the former world no. 1 replied: ‘There isn’t any Big Four, only Big Three. Murray can’t be compared to the other three players. The Big Four concept was created because Andy was the fourth to be always in the semi-finals, but the other three won.
So you cannot put a player who won three Slam titles with who has 12, 15 and 19,’ Wilander had said before Nadal’s US Open win. ‘The difference is very big, although there is a big gap between Murray and other top-10 players.
And coming back to the question, you can’t compare such different scenarios. Roger Federer is the best in the history. But if we compare Federer with the 2035 US Open champion, the Swiss can’t win. No chance. The game evolves in a very fast way.
By this logic, Wilander of the 1980s would not win any game against today’s players.’He just said Federer is the best player ever. But, who is the player he admires the most? ‘Nadal. Obviously Roger fights in every match, but he doesn’t show it in the same way.
Rafa is 100% involved in every match I have seen him play, you can note his passion for competition and to reach perfection. My ultimate admiration for him is because of the way he stays on court.’
While asked on the US Open’s below par level & withdrawals of many top level players he said, “The best players in the world need to be playing the best tournaments, because it makes the level higher and this year with five out of the (usual) top 10 out of the tournament, you could think you were going to feel the effect,”
Murray is set to return next year on the court & it will be interesting to see how he slams his critics with his to class play.
