Red Bull’s F1 driver Max Verstappen has revealed that one of the main problem he had this season with the Red Bull car this year was its inability to overtake.
Verstappen enjoyed a powerful later half after clinching two victories – Malaysian Grand Prix & Mexico Grand Prix.
The Dutchman was one of the standout performers of the year and out-performed teammate Daniel Ricciardo on Saturdays, beating him 13-7 over the season.
This year saw the introduction of wider, faster cars, which dramatically increased cornering speeds and lowered lap times. But according to him, overtaking was a major setback in his 2017 season.
“This year I actually didn’t have that many overtakes,” Verstappen revealed.
“With this car you are actually only able to overtake on the straights.
“Which is really not that satisfying compared to last year.”
Verstappen’s last win came in Malasyia where he defeated 2017 Champion Lewis Hamilton. “It felt good, but honestly, it doesn’t matter who I fight with as long as it is for the win”.
“It wasn’t a particularly special feeling.”, he said about the race.
Asked about if the new style of cars suited him ? he said: “I think in general yes, it’s been a bit more positive because it’s more like a race car. Last year’s was a bit more like a toy car for my feeling.”
