Olympics Day is celebrated on 23rd June every year & on the occasion, let’s have a look at India’s medal & that pride moments in Olympics till date for India. Till now, India has won 26 medals in Olympics (9 Golds, 5 Silvers & 12 Bronze),  Eight of the nine Golds has come from Hockey.


Despite going from ups & downs, India is the most successful team ever in Olympics, having won eight Olympic Gold medals till date. In 1928, the team won its first Olympic gold medal and until 1956, the India men’s team remained unbeaten in the Olympics.

Those were the Golden Days for Indian Hockey but the darkest moment came in 2008, when the team failed to even qualify for the Olympics.

Till now, Indian Hockey Team has won 11 medals in Olympic History ( 8 Gold, 1 Silver & 2 Bronze).


Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav was the first to win a bronze in 1952. Sushil Kumar went on to become the only Indian after Pritchard to win two medals in an individual event, winning a bronze in 2008 and a silver in 2012.

In 2012, Yogeshwar Dutt won a bronze and Sakshi Malik went on to be the first Indian female wrestler to win a medal at the Olympics securing a silver in 2016.

Till now, India has won 5 medals (1 Silver & 4 Bronze).

The Darkest moment in the Sport came when Narsingh Yadav & Sushil Kumar had to fight for a quota & in the end there was no Indian Participation in 74 kg category as Narsingh was tested positive for Drugs.


In 2008, Abhinav Bindra became the first Indian to win a gold in an individual event, that moment was Historical for India in many ways. As after so many years India had a Gold in Olympics & that too not in hockey.

Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore won a silver in 2004, while Gagan Narang and Vijay Kumar secured a bronze and a silver respectively in the 2012 games.

India will have so many expectations with shooters again in upcoming Olympics.


Saina Nehwal & P.V. Sindhu has the been the Golden Girls for India.

Saina Nehwal won a bronze in 2012 London Olympics while in 2016 Rio Olympics, P.V. Sindhu became the first Indian female to win a Silver medal in Olympics ever.

India will eye a medal again in Badminton as many players are coming up, specially in men’s singles category .


Vijender Singh, currently continuing his career in Pro-level, became the first Indian Boxer to grab a bronze at 2008 Beijing Olympics. Being a pro-Boxer ruled him out of the Rio Olympics.

Mary kom, Five-time World Champion won a Bronze at 2012 London Olympics to become the first Indian lady to win a medal in boxing for India at Olympics.


Karnam Malleswari won a bronze in weightlifting in 2000 becoming first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal at that time. 

She retired from the International competition after failing to score at 2004 Athens Olympics.


The only medal from Tennis came in long time ago when Leander Paes secured a bronze in Tennis in 1996 Olympics in individual events.

Leander Paes is the only player in the World to compete in Seven Olympics. He competed in consecutive Olympic appearances from 1992 to 2016.
