Defending champion PV Sindhu failed to retain the title as she went down fighting against world No. 11 Beiwen Zhang of USA in the summit clash of India Open Super 500 at Siri Fort Complex in Delhi on Sunday.
Sindhu lost the final in three games 18-21, 21-11, 20-22 in one hour and nine minutes. It is the first major title for the fifth seed American.
Zhang won the first game quite comfortably but Sindhu came roaring back into the match during the second game. It looked like she had the wind in her sails when she temporarily held the advantage in the third but it remained a neck and neck affair. Sindhu reached 20 points first but Zhang turned it around and took three points on the trott to win the Indian Open.
PV sindhu booked a place in the final of the India Open by beating Ratchanok Intanon in the semis on Saturday.
The defending champion crushed the Thai star in straight games to progress into today’s championship clash.

Sindhu always played long matches against Zhang, all of them going to the decider, and it was no different as the duo battled till the last point.
Playing her second tournament of the new season, It was hard luck for Sindhu but there were a lot of positive she can take from her run in the tournament.
