Money matters ! Passion for sports, motivation & income are some of the reasons why top players keep playing after turning 30. The highest paid tennis players’ list between 2016-17 June is, for the 12th straight year, Roger Federer. People love to see Federer & that’s why sponsors are ready to pay him huge amount.
The Swiss Maestro earned $64 million, which is something remarkable thinking that he skipped the whole half of the 2016 season. But Federer is a money machine on the sponsors side as he earned almost $60 million in just 12 months.
Cristiano Ronaldo leads the way with 93 million dollars, followed by LeBron James and Leo Messi. The fourth sportsman is Roger, who earned $64 million (58 from endorsements and 6 from tournaments).
His earnings will increase more and more, as he will earn big bonus at the end of the year after winning two Grand Slam titles in 2017 and being in the race for the Year-End No. 1 spot. Also, in May he signed a five-year contract with pasta producer Barilla, that will see him earn $40 million in total.
His sponsors include Wilson, Credit Suisse, Mercedes, Rolex, Lindt, Jura, Moet & Chandon, Sunrise, NetJets and Nike, that pays Federer almost $10 million a year, according to Forbes.
But the $64 million mentioned are not only from sponsors and prize money. Federer asks for more than $2 million to play exhibitions (IPTL in 2014, Laver Cup this year), more than one million dollars to play ATP 250 and 500 events.
He has a life-time contract with Dubai and Halle and with Basel until 2019. However, he gives back a lot for charity: he played two exhibitions for his foundation in April at Zurich and Seattle.
The RF Foundation, created in 2004, donated $30 million for educational programs in Africa.
Novak Djokovic is the 16th highest paid athlete with 37.6 million (28 by endorsements, 9.6 prize money). Nole earned 18 million less than June 2015-2016, especially because during that time he earned more money from tournaments.
