Former World no. 1 & Olympic medallist Saina Nehwal has pulled off a major upset after defeating no. 2 seed Sung Ji Hyun of Korea in straight sets by 21-19, 21-15 to reach her 7th consecutive World Champ. Quarters.
With this win, Saina becomes the third Indian to reach the quarter-finals of World Badminton Championship after Kidambi Srikanth & P.V. Sindhu won their respective matches earlier.
After 8-12 down in the first game, Saina hold her nerves & came back strongly to put Sung Ji Hyun off the court to level the things at 17-17. She scored back to back points after that & won the first game narrowly by 21-19.
Korean shuttler started the second game with the lead of 8-4 & was leading Saina during the break by 11-7, but once again the experienced Indian shuttler knocks out Sung Ji Hyun with her brilliant attack &net play to take the match by 21-19, 21-15.
P.V. Sindhu & Srikanth into Quarters of World Champ, Indian Doubles campaign comes to an end
India’s P.V. Sindhu & Kidambi Srikanth reach the quarter-finals of World Badminton Championship, while mixed pair of Manu Attri & Reddy bows out of the tournament.
Indian ace shuttler P.V. Sindhu moves into her fourth quart-finals after a stunning win over Cheung Ngan Yi of Hong Kong by 19-21, 23-21, 21-17 .
Despite loosing the first set, Sindhu came back strongly & win the last two sets to book her spot in the next round. She will take on Sun Yu of China in quarter-finals.
Kidambi Srikanth continued his fine form with a convincing 21-14, 21-18 win in the round of 16 clash against Denmark’s Anders Antonsen.
The Indian ace will next take on South Korean world number 1 Son Wan-ho, who qualified for the quarter-final by beating Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk 21-14, 17-21, 21-13.
Earlier in the day, doubles pairing of Pranaav Chopra and Sikki Reddy lost 20-22, 21-18, 21-18 to Indonesia’s Debby Susanto and Praveen Jordan to exit the tournament.
