World no.2 Roger Federer gets a step closer to his 20th grand slam title by defeating Tomas Berdych in straight sets 7-6 (7/1), 6-3, 6-4.
Despite a poor start, reigning Australian Open Champion Federer hold on to his nerves to book his place into another semis where he will meet unseeded korea’s H.Chung who sent former World no.1 Novak Djokovic packing in Round of 16.
Tomas Berdych made a brilliant start, he broke in the second game & was leading 5-3 in the opening set & had a wonderful chance to go a set up.
The Swiss master had two break points in the ninth game, but he was still visibly tense.
His frustration boiled over when he challenged a call, and despite Hawk-Eye not being able to show the shot,
Federer lost one of his break points and a challenge, prompting him to come to the net and argue with Irish chair umpire Fergus Murphy.
But the incident seemed to fire up Federer, and six points later he crushed a backhand winner to break back for 5-4 down.
The break clearly messed up the things for Berdych & he was nowhere to be seen with Federer’s superiority.
In the tie breaker, Federer got off to a flying start & took the set in flash by 7-6(7/1).
Berdych tried to put all his disappointment aside as he was in a strong position to win the first set but his frustration costs him the second set too as Federer notched up the second set by 6-3.
Berdych left the court for a medical time-out after the second set, but returned to hold serve in the opening game. But it was just all Federer show who was continuously applying pressure on Berdych’s serve & finally broke him for 3-2 and went on to clinch the match in two hours, 14 minutes.
