US Open Day 3 Highlights : 2 Major Upsets in Men’s & Women’s Singles

  • SHAPOVALOV STUNS TSONGA

– Canadian youngster Denis Shapovalov upsets eighth-seeded French Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-4 6-4 7-6(3) to become the youngest player to enter the U.S. Open third round since American Donald Young in 2007.

– Shapovalov struck 28 winners in the match lasting two hours and 11 minutes.

Currenty ranked at 69th in the world, the 18-year-old had only played three Tour-level matches – including an impressive win over Nick Kyrgios as a wildcard in Toronto – ahead of this year and his meeting with Tsonga was only his third Grand Slam main draw match.

Shapovalov stormed through qualifying before destroying Daniil Medvedev in round one to book himself a spot under the lights on the showpiece court in New York.

  • MAKAROVA Knocks out WOZNIACKI

Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova sends Denmark’s 5th seed Caroline packing with a 6-2 6-7(5) 6-1 victory in two hours and 20 minutes in the final match of the third day at Arthur Ashe stadium.

The No.5 seed couldn’t find the answers to Makarova’s controlled aggression and tricky lefty shots, and Makarova came away with the edge after three straight breaks of serve, before reeling off another five straight games to grab the opening set and start the second a break to the good.

  • SUAREZ NAVARRO OUSTS LUCIC-BARONI

– Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro battled past Croatia’s Mirjana Lucic-Baroni 4-6 7-6(4) 6-2 in two hours and 19 minutes.

  • STEPHENS BATTLES PAST CIBULKOVA

– American Sloane Stephens outlasts Slovakia’s Dominika Cibulkova 6-2 5-7 6-3 to reach third round.

  • CORIC KNOCKS ZVEREV OUT

– Unseeded Croatian Borna Coric ends the campaign of fellow 20-year-old Alexander Zverev, winning 3-6 7-5 7-6(1) 7-6(4) in three hours and 26 minutes. The German fourth seed fires down 22 aces in the match but had seven double faults and 58 unforced errors.

  • VENUS SECURES THIRD ROUND SPOT

– Ninth seed Venus Williams records 32 winners on her way to a 7-5 6-4 second round win over France’s Oceane Dodin.

  • KVITOVA SEES OFF Cornet CHALLENGE

  • – Petra Kvitova, seeded 13th, beats France’s Alize Cornet 6-1 6-2 to reach the third round.

    • HOME FAVOURITE ISNER MOVES ON

    – Big-serving American John fires 30 aces on his way to a 6-3 6-4 7-5 second-round victory over South Korea’s Chung Hyeon.
