Bottas joined Mercedes from Williams in January following Nico Rosberg’s shock decision to quit Formula One.
And he made a promising start with the German constructors and secured race wins in Russia and Austria.
However, Bottas has tailed off towards the end of the season as Hamilton wrapped up his fourth World Drivers’ Championship.
Bottas says he’s focussed on getting better though as he looks to come out on top from his rivalry with Hamilton next year.
“I always knew it was going to be a challenge as Lewis is such a good driver and he is one of the best ever in Formula One,” Bottas explained to the The National.
“It is always a challenge to be ahead of him.
“I couldn’t beat him this year but I am working on my weaknesses.”
Despite his struggles in comparison to Hamilton, Bottas says Mercedes have not put excessive expectations on him during his first F1 season with them.
“I didn’t have much issues with pressure as I felt the whole team was behind me,” he added.
“It has felt like they have been really behind me and I have had so much support from the guys.”
Bottas is third in the drivers’ standings going into the final race of the season.
He can leapfrog Sebastian Vettel into second if he wins in Abu Dhabi and the Ferrari man fails to pick up any points.
