AFC U-16 Championship: India take on Indonesia for a QF berth U-16 Championship: India take on Indonesia for a QF berth

India’s under 16 football team will be up against Indonesia in its last group stage match in which a win or a draw will ensure a QF berth for the team after long sixteen years at AFC U-16 Championship.

India U16 Football Team put in a massive performance to hold heavyweights Iran to a goal-less draw in their last match and a similar show against Indonesia will put Indian team a step forward to FIFA U-17 World Cup.

With a win and a draw, both India and Indonesia have four points from their two matches but Indonesia is at the top of Group C, because of their better goal difference.

While India’s u-16 football team defeated Vietnam by 1-0 in their first match of the AFC U-16 Championship, Indonesia were held to a 1-1 draw by them. Indonesia then defeated the Iran 2-0 but India played out a draw with the former champions.

This was also the first time after the Asia Cup finals in 1984 that an Indian team across all age groups avoided defeat against Iran.

India’s head coach, Bibiano Fernandes is looking for nothing less than a win to ensure their slot in the last eight but a loss against Indonesia can complicate the things.

These are the five scenarios in which India can move to QF of  AFC U-16 Championship 2018:

  • India beats Indonesia

Should India beat the mighty Indonesians, they will not only qualify for the quarterfinals but will make it through being the table toppers.

Finishing on the top of the Group C, will give them a slightly weaker team to compete in the qf stage of the competition.

  • India draw against Indonesia

If the India vs Indonesia game ends in a draw, the top two teams from group C will remain unchanged, which means that Indonesia will go through as the table toppers and India will qualify as the second best and will play against the Group D topper, that is most likely to be South Korea.

  • India lose to Indonesia; Vietnam beat Iran

India will again qualify as the runners up if Vietnam manages to beat the heavyweights Iran, which is most unlikely to happen, looking at the form of Vietnam’s team.

In addition to that, Iran’s coach Abbas Chamanyan has ensured his team will show beautiful football in the last game as they still stand a chance to qualify for the knockout stages of the AFC U-16 Championship.

But, still if Vietnam overcome Iran, both India and Vietnam will have four points after the last group match. However, a 1-0 win over Vietnam means that the Indian colts will make it through because of a better head-to-head record.

  • India lose to Indonesia; Vietnam draws Iran

In this case too, Indonesian U-16 Football team will make it through to the QF stage as the table toppers while India will also make the cut with 4 points.

  • India lose to Indonesia; Iran beat Vietnam

If Iran beat Indonesia and India fail to get rid of Indonesian team, both the team will have four points. The teams played out a 0-0 draw and that’s why head-to-head will not come into picture.

We then move to goal difference (GD). As, it stands India have GD of +1 and Iran have a GD of -2. So, Iran really needs a big margin win over Vietnam while India have to keep this margin as wide as possible to move further in the tournament.

  • Author’s take to the story:

While, a draw would be enough for the Indian colts to take them to the next round but they will most likely meet South Korea there and that will not be a easy task for the team to outplay them.

As, AFC U-16 Championship’s semifinals berth ensure country a quota in FIFA U-17 World Cup. That’s where a need to win is so important if team is looking to qualify for the World Cup fot the first time ever on merit basis, a win against Indonesia will most probably draw India against Australia in the QF, which is a slightly weaker opponent for the team to play against.

Indian U16 Football Team will take on Indonesia on Thursday.
