asian athletic championship 2019

The 2019 Asian Athletics Championships will be the 23rd edition of the Asian Athletics Championships. It is scheduled to be held in Doha, Qatar. The event will be held at the Khalifa International Stadium and will serve as the test event for the 2019 athletics World Championships which are being held at the same venue.

Asian Athletics Championship

The event will feature a number of athletes from 63 participating countries, including a number of nations from Oceania. The Indian contingent will be hoping to build on its immensely successful performance in the 2017 edition of the Asian Athletics Championships held in Bhubaneswar, where they finished atop the medal tally with an impressive haul of 29 medals, outdoing favourites China by a considerable margin.

Towards that goal, it is essential for the Indian athletes to perform up to their true potential in the Asian championships in Doha (21-24 April). It will serve a dual purpose. If one becomes the champion that gives the athlete a straight entry into the World Championships to be held at the same venue in September-October this year. If that target is missed there would be no need to despair; they can aim for a good placing, not necessarily a podium finish, towards gathering valuable points that go into the world rankings calculations for 2020 Olympics.

An elbow injury has forced the country’s highest-ranked athlete, javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra to pull out of the team. The big names missing 800m runner Manjit Singh – both with injuries – and triple jumper Arpinder Singh, who failed to qualify. All of them were gold medalists at the Asian Games.

Also missing out due to injury is quarter-miler A. Dharun, who has been on a national record-breaking spree in the hurdles, while other Asiad silver medallists, steeple-chaser Sudha Singh and long jumper Neena Pinto, were nowhere close to their Asian Games form.

Tamil Nadu distance runner G. Lakshmanan, the last Asians’ big star in Bhubaneswar with a golden 5000-10,000m double, could not even finish among the medals in last month’s Federation Cup, the Asians’ main qualification meet.
