Debutant boxer Amit Panghal created history today by winning the only gold medal for India in Boxing by defeating reigning Olympic champion Hasanboy Dusmatov in the men’s 49 kg final at Asian Games 2018.
Amit was the lone Indian boxer to make the final in the ongoing edition, beating Philippines’ Carlo Paalam in a 3-2 verdict and today he fought like a true champion to beat Rio Olympics Gold medalist and twice Asian Champion in the final.
The 22-year-old Armyman, won the bout by 3-2 in a split decision, three judges from Korea, France and Great Britain were in the favor of the Indian while judges from Algeria and Japan favored the Uzbek’s boxer.
There were tears of joy from the Indian boxer while he was standing on the podium, listening to India’s national anthem.
Amit got to a better start in the first two rounds than the Olympic Champ and his punches were right on mark along with the good speed while Dusmatov wasn’t quite able to land any big blows in the initial rounds.
He was quite sharp and seemed to had taken the edge over Dusmatov as the boxers entered the final round.
The Indian, got a bit defensive in the final round knowing he was in the lead and drew the Uzbek to attack him and this strategy worked perfectly well to win the gold in his first Asian Games outing.
The Armyman, who hails from Haryana, won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games earlier this year.
He also won gold at the prestigious Strandja Memorial Tournament in Bulgaria earlier this year and has been enjoying a breakthrough season. He is also an Asian championships bronze-medallist.
India is currently on 8th position in the medal tally with overall 66 medals (14 Gold, 23 Silver & 29 Bronze).
