Ankita Raina on Wednesday confirmed just the third singles medal in women’s tennis for India at the Asian Games as she reached the semi-finals despite being 1-4 down at one stage.

India’s top-ranked women’s singles player, Raina breezed past Eudice Chong 6-4 6-1 of Hong Kong in their quarter-final match.

She won the first set in 54 minutes and took only 27 minutes to claim the second set.

Raina came back from behind to take the first set 6-4 against Chong of Hong Kong. She was trailing 0-3 and 1-4 at the beginning of the match before staging a comeback.

Raina thus assured herself of at least a bronze medal.

Meanwhile, Tennis stars Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan confirm a medal for India as they reached the semifinals of the men’s doubles category at the 18th Asian Games here on Wednesday.

The Indian duo defeated Hsieh Chengpeng and Yang Tsung—Hua of Chinese Taipei 6—3, 5—7, 10—1 in a hard fought quarterfinal encounter.

The Indians will take on K. Uesugi and S. Shimabukuro of Japan in the semis.

The Japanese pair had beaten Gong Maoxin and Ze Zhang of China 4—6, 6—2, 10—2 in another bitterly fought quarterfinal.

In mixed doubles, the pair of Ramkumar Ramanthan and Ankita Raina storms into the quarter-finals with a dominating win over Hongkong’s duo of Chong Ew and Wong Ch in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.

The biggest disappointment came from men’s singles where second seed Ramkumar Ramkumar lost to lower ranked Uzbekistan’s Karimov Jurabek by 6-3, 4-6, 3-6 in the pre-quarterfinals.

In another singles match, Prajnesh won his respective match against Nam Hoang in a thrilling contest by 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals of the Asian Games 2018.

It was curtains for women’s doubles (Ankita Raina & PG Thombare) and men’s doubles duo of R. Ramanathan & S Nagal, who lost their respective double matches.
