Day 1 of Asian Squash Championship saw 6 Indians getting into pre-quaters of the championship held in Express Avenue in Chennai while Joshna & Dipika already got a BYE to pre-quarters in women’s category.

Pakistan is the only nation to withdraw of the championship due to some visa issues.

No Indian has yet won the Asian Championship in the tournament’s 36- year old history,  with the closest that anyone has come to winning the title being former national champion Misha Grewal. She finished runners-up in the 1996 edition, losing to Malaysia’s Leong Siu Lynn in the final at Amman, Jordan.

The opening day was split into three sessions  – the morning matches at ISA, followed by afternoon session at both venues.

Saurav Ghosal, seeded no.2 in the championship started with a bang defeating Benedict Chan of Singapore in straight sets 11-2, 11-3, 11-5. Ghosal is believed to be one of the favourite to win the title in Men’s Single category & end the drought for India.

Velavan, who reached the two successive finals recently in the PSA world tour events in South Africa made a perfect start over Iranian Soheil Shamoli defeating him 11-1, 11-5, 11-5. In the second round, he got walkover from the Pakistan player, assuring him a pre-quaters spot.

Joining Sourav & Velavan in pre-quaters were 10th seed Vikram Malhotra, 11th seed Mahesh Mangaonkar & 15th seed Harinder Pal Singh who defeated their opponents respectively.

Aditya Jagtap was the only player who face loss in Men’s category, going down to Malaysia’s Mohd. Nafiizwan in three sets 11-5, 11-6, 11-8.

Sunayna Kuruvilla in Women’s category outplayed korean 12th seed Choe Yura by 11-4, 11-8, 11-8 to book her ticket to pre-quaters.

Joshana Chinappa & Dipika Pallikal seeded 2nd & 4th respectively in the women’s category got BYE & will start their campaign from tomorrow in pre-quarters. Both the girls have a great opportunity to win the tournament.
