Head coach Ravi Shastri finally gets his way as three-member committee appointed by Committee of Administrators (CoA) gave the nod for the appointment of Bharat Arun as Indian team’s full-time bowling coach.
While, Sanjay Bangar and R Sridhar will continue in their roles as batting and fielding coach respectively.
The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprising of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman had suggested Rahul Dravid (overseas) and Zaheer Khan as batting and bowling consultants. But CoA was disappointed that CAC picked Dravid and Zaheer without consulting them and CoA chief Vinod Rai says the two names suggested were only recommendations.
After being chosen as coach, Shastri had made it clear of having his own set of assistant coaches but welcome to Zaheer and Dravid helping the team with their inputs.
“The BCCI can certainly bring in guys like Zaheer and Dravid as consultants from time to time. Their experience is invaluable. But as far as a full-time support is concerned, I will need to decide on it because it is me who will be working with them for next two years,” Shastri had earlier said.
Arun had replaced Joe Dawes in 2014 and was with the side till 2016 when Shastri was in the role of team director. It was on Shastri’s recommendation, BCCI had then appointed Arun as bowling coach when he was a bowling consultant at the NCA.
The BCCI headquarters was buzzing with activity from Monday itself as the batting coach Sanjay Bangar came calling to meet the CEO Rahul Johri and General Manager MV Sridhar, Cricket Operations Rahul Johri, with whom he had spent a lot of time in West Indies last week.
This is also an indicator that Rahul Dravid (batting consultant for overseas Test tours) and Zaheer despite being consultants, may not be allowed to earn from another coaching assignment in conflict (IPL). If Zaheer’s requirement is for a very limited period, it may be up to him to say thanks but no thanks.
