Indian Rowing team had decent day at Olympic Qualifier

The World Rowing Asia Oceania Continental Olympic and Paralympic Qualifying Regatta, starting Wednesday in Tokyo, will serve as a precursor to the Olympicst thatis scheduled in the same city a couple of months later. A nine-member Indian Rowing squad, including four in the women’s category, are participating in the Asian Olympic qualification event.

The programme which was schedule to start from Wednesday had been revised due to tricky local weather conditions. The competition now started today (Thursday) and conclude on Friday.

Indian Rowing Team : Jakar Khan

 

Jakar Khan in the men’s single scull, qualify for Semifinal after second place finish in heat 3 with timing of 8.07.32. Jakar finish Behind Bahman of  Iran and Mamo of Indonesia also qualify for Semi-Final. Semi-Final is schedule for Tomorrow which will have top 3 automatic qualifiers from all 3 heats and 3 more will Join from Repechage.

5 Quota are available in Single Scull which mean top 5 finish among 6 finalist will guarantee a Tokyo Olympic Ticket. The team decided not to carry equipment due to travel restrictions. They instead hired boats and other equipment on Sunday in Japan.

The men’s Double Sculls team consists of Khan, Arjun Jat and Arvind Singh Qualify for Final and is one Race away from Tokyo quota . They finish 2nd behind Host Nation Japan in heat 1 with timing of 7.09.57 and make it to final.

3 Quota is available in Men’s Doubles Sculls which mean Indian team will have to finish in top 3 among 6 finalist . Top 2 teams from each group had qualified for Final .two more teams will join them after today’s evening Repechage round.

Khuspreet Kaur also advance to Semifinal after finishing 2nd in her Repechage round. Earlier Kaur finish 5th (last) in her Heat with timing of 9.31.66 and move to Repechage round .

In semi-final it will be 12 player rowing across 2 heats and top 3 will make it directly to Final from both heats . Jakar will be up against Rower from Vietnam, Japan, Iraq, Hongkong and Phillipines.

In women Double Sculls there was only one direct final spot which was taken by Host Japan. Indian pair finish 5th among 6 team with timing of 9.02.17. Later in Repechage Indian pair finished 5th and are out of Quota race, they will now have to complete in Final B which will be for Ranking only.

A country can earn maximum one quota from this tournament unless they manage to finish on the top of two event. If a NOC failed to finish on top of two event  but still manage to achieve the criteria , then the Boat with (more…)
