After a lackluster performance in the Commonwealth Games, Indian hockey team has started the Champions Trophy on high after defeating their arch-rivals Pakistan by 4-0 in the opening match at Breda, Holland.
India, who played a draw with Pakistan by 2-2 in the recently concluded Commonwealth Games, came back strongly to prove their point and totally outplayed the lower ranked Pakistan to start the Champions Trophy proceedings on a right note.
The return of Sardar Singh and veteran goalkeeper and captain Sreejesh proved out to be a good thing for the team as they played some disciplined and efficient hockey against Pakistan.
India drew the first blood after Ramandeep gracefully guided Simranjeet’s cross-in into the net to put blue tigers ahead by 1-0 just before 5 minutes to go for second quarter.
With just two minutes into the game after second half, Pakistan was denied a goal after Harmanpreet referred against the on-field umpire’s decision and in the replay it was clearly seen that the Pakistan’s striker had hit a stick instead of the ball in the circle, enough to disallow the goal.
With just 15 minutes left on the clock, Pakistan team started to put immense pressure on the Indian defence but the Asian Champions counter attacked and a superb pass by Surender Kumar found Dilpreet on the edge of the circle, who scored a great field goal to double the Indian lead by 2-0.
After getting two goals down, Pakistan decided to take off their Goal-keeper Imran Butt off to have an extra player on the field, but this decision back fired as India exploited the Pakistan’s defence in last 5 minutes to score two back to back goals from the sticks of Mandeep Singh and Lalit Upadhaya.
India will have a uphill task ahead as they will take on Rio Olympics Champion Argentina tomorrow at 3:30 pm (IST) in their second match of the Champions Trophy 2018.
This is how Twitter reacted to India’s win over Pakistan:

What stood out for IND in 4-0 v Pak
1. Positioning of Indian defence.
2. The way Indian forwards fell back to defend after losing the ball
3. Match awareness of the midfield
4. Dilpreet's cool-headed goal
Next India play Argentina tomorrow at 3:30pm IST#HCT2018 #hockey #INDvPAK

Well played India. And Incredibly stupid game Pakistan. How can you drag the goalkeeper out into attack with so much time to go. If that’s how dumb Oltmans is, he’s good riddance for us. Deserved the 0-4 humiliation. #INDvPAK
