After incredible success of Indian women’s table tennis team, Indian men’s have also reached finals of the team event after beating defending champions Singapore in semis today here at Commonwealth Games, Australia.
Indian women’s team defeated Singapore yesterday by 3-1 in a huge upset to claim the historical first gold medal of CWG 2018 for the nation. Following the footsteps of women’s team, men also get the better of Asian powerhouse in a thriller encounter by 3-2.
Singapore, who won gold medal in men’s event in 2010 and 2014 Commonwealth Games, only managed to win two singles matches, that too with the help of veteran Gao Ning, who is considered Singapore’s best male player.
The 35-year-old legend, Gao Ning, a three-time gold medallist at CWG, defeated Harmeet Desai and G Sathiyan 3-0 and 3-1 respectively to make the things more interesting.
But A Sharath Kamal made sure the tie belongs to India after winning his both men’s singles rubbers against Xue Jie Pang and Shao Feng Ethan Poh by similar margins of 3-0. He never gave his opponents a chance to comeback in the match and sealed the tie for India in style.
In the doubles, the combination of Sathiyan and Desai rallied for a 3-1 win over Pang and Poh proved a crucial one as it just put the tie in favor of the Indians, who will now play against England or Nigeria in a “Gold medal match” later today.
India would be looking to win their second men’s team event Gold, the first Gold came back in 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games where the team scripted history by grabbing the first position.
Indian badminton team will also be looking to win against mighty Malaysians in the “Gold medal match”, going to happen at 1PM (IST).
