India’s brilliant show in Table tennis continues as men’s table tennis team grabbed 9th gold medal for the country by defeating Nigeria in the finals of Commonwealth Games, Australia.
This is the first time in the history of Commonwealth Games, that both India’s women and men’s table tennis team have grabbed a gold medal in team event together.
Earlier, in the semis, India caused yet another upset by defeating defending champions Singapore in a 5 match thriller by 3-2 to reach the finals after long 12 years.
Indian men’s team, who won a gold in same event of 2006 Melbourne Games, played incredibly to dominate Nigeria by 3-0 in the finals.
A. Sharath kamal, who won two crucial matches against the mighty Singapore today, gave a brilliant start to Indian team by defeating Bode Abiodun easily by 3-0 and providing a helpful lead of 1-0 to the start the gold-medal match.
In the next rubber, G Sathiyan recovered well from his first set loss to win the next three sets against two times Commonwealth Gold medalist Segun Toriola to put his team into the driving seat of the tie by 2-0.
Indian experienced duo of Harmeet Desai and G Sathiyan were up against Nigeria’s pair of Olajide Omotayo and Segun Toriola in the third match and and the pair made sure they sealed the tie for India with ease by defeating Nigerian duo by 11-8, 11-5, 11-3 to lift a team event gold medal for the country after 12 years.
Yesterday, Indian women’s team scripted history by defeating all time CWG Champions Singapore in a high-voltage final to clinch India’s first ever gold medal in women’s team event.
Meanwhile, Jitu Rai won the first Gold of the day for India and Indian badminton team is also leading Malaysia by 2-1 in the finals of mixed team event.
With this Gold, Indian medal tally moves up to 18 medals (9 Gold, 4 Silver, 5 Bronze).
