17-year old wonder boy and Khelo India Champion, Srihari Natraj smashed the national record today to enter the 50m backstroke semi-finals in ongoing Commonwealth Games 2018, Gold Coast, Australia.
Indian swimmer Srihari clocked a time of 26.47 seconds to qualify for the next round on the 9th spot among 16 qualifiers in his category.
He finished third in his heat behind Australia’s Mitch Larkin, who had a time of 25.32 seconds and Xavier Castelli of Wales who registered 25.91 seconds in the heat to qualify for top 16 stage.
Another Australian, Zac Incerti finished as the overall leader after registering a superb timing of 25.05 seconds in heat 2, followed by Mitch Larkin (24.32 seconds), who won the gold medal yesterday in 100m event.
Srihari, who also broke the national record for 100m backstroke yesterday by finishing the race in 56.65 seconds would look to make his presence felt in the semis and his ultimate goal would be to qualify for the finals in CWG 2018.
Despite clocking a record-breaking time in 100m backstroke yesterday, he failed to qualify for the finals and finished on 14th place in the overall standings.
India has started the Day 3 on high with Sathish kumar winning the third gold medal for the nation. India’s men and women table tennis teams have reached the semi-finals too and will play for a place in Gold-medal match tomorrow.
