Gururaja grabs India’s first medal of the Commonwealth Games 2018 by winning the silver in men’s 56kg weightlifting in Gold Coast, Australia on Thursday. 

P. Gururaja, who won Commonwealth Championship gold in Penang in 2016 and South Asian Games gold medal earlier, lifted a personal best total of 249 kg (111 in Snatch and 138 in Clean & Jerk) to clinch the podium finish. This win came after a disappointing by the country’s women’s team that went down 2-3 to Wales.

Muhammad Izhar Ahmad of Malaysia took the gold after lifting a massive total of 261 kg {Snatch – 117 (GR) and C&J -144 (KG) }, which was also a new Games Record in men’s 56 kg category. Sri Lanka’s Chaturanga Lakmal grabbed the bronze medal after a total lift of 248 kg.

Gururaja Commonwealth Games, Gold Coast

Son of a pick-up-truck driver, Gururaja hails from Kundapura in coastal Karnataka and started out as a wrestler before switching to Powerlifting and then weightlifting.

Earlier, Gururaja said in an interview that a podium finish in Commonwealth Games 2018 will help in improving his family’s living standard, which has gone to great lengths to keep his sporting dreams alive.

He used to lend money for food supplements and almost decided to leave the sport because of the family burdens. This silver medal may help him in the best manner and encourage him for the next tournaments.

World Champion Saikhom Mirabai Chanu will be in action later in women’s 48 kg category and will be the favorite to clinch the first Gold medal for India.
