Indian Hockey Team will take on Netherlands tonight in the quarterfinals with a aim to take a step closer to end their 43-year long wait to lift the men’s Hockey World Cup title.
India qualified directly to the quarterfinals after a enormous show in group stages, while Netherlands had to play a crossover against Canada to reach the last eight stage.
India are yet to be beaten in the tournament while Netherlands faced a heavy defeat from four times Olympic Champion, Germany (1-4) in the Pool D fixture.
India began their campaign on a high note by defeating South Africa 5-0 before holding a much-fancied Belgium side to 2-2. The Blue Tigers needed a win in their last group fixture to ensure direct passage into the quarters and they beat Canada 5-1 with four goals in the final quarter.
However, Netherlands are favorite going into the match as Indian hockey team has never defeated them in any World Cup fixture. In their last six meetings at the quadrennial event, the Netherlands have defeated India five times, with one match ending in a draw.
The over all head-to-head record belongs to the Dutch. In the 105 games played between the two sides so far, India have won 33, lost 48 while the rest ended in draws.
While the Netherlands are placed fourth in the current world rankings, India are a rung below in fifth position. But looking at the recent form and home advantage, India can upset any team in the world on their day.
