India finally win their first medal in athletics after Seema Punia and Navjeet Dhillon clinched a silver and bronze medal in women’s discuss throw here at Commonwealth Games, Australia. 

Seema, who won a silver medal in Glasgow Commonwealth Games, maintained her position this time too after throwing a best throw of 60.41m, which was enough to secure her a second position.

Navjeet kaur Dhillon, the World Junior Championship medalist in 2014, stunned everyone with her brilliant performance after throwing the discuss to 57.43m in her last attempt to snatch the bronze medal from New Zealand’s Sositina Hakei who was looking strong in the 3rd position with the best throw of 57.16m.

Gold of the women’s discuss throw event went to former World Champion Australia’s Dani Stevens who broke the Games record by throwing 68.26m, which was a bit low than her personal best.

Seema Punia started her campaign with a throw of 60.41m, followed by 59.71, X, 58.41, X, 58.90 while Navjeet was always trailing in the competition at 4th position with the best throw of 56.22m but her last throw put Indian in the medal contention & secured two medals for India in women’s discuss throw event.
