India ends with Ravinder and Pooja Gehlot Silver at U23 Senior World Championships held in Budapest, Hungary. Ravinder clinched the silver medal in the men’s freestyle 61kg category while Gehlot finished second in the 53 kg category.
Ravinder on 1st November became the fifth Indian grappler to win a medal in the world U-23 Championships in its three years history. Haryana Grappler was trailing by 1-3 before making a comeback to make it 3-4 in the last minute of the final after that an unsuccessful India challenge resulting in 3-5 loss. Ravinder had earlier defeated European champion Arsen Harutyunan of Armenia by 4-3 in the semi-finals bout. Ravinder was trailing 0-3 in that bout but came back strongly to make it to final.
Whereas Pooja Gehlot who compete in 53kg claimed India’s second silver medal after going down to Japan’s 2017 world champion Haruna Okuno in the finals of the UWW Under-23 World Championships. She equalises the best finish for an Indian woman wrestler at U-23 World Championships as Ritu Phogat had also won Silver in 2017 edition. Pooja starts her medal hunt by beating Ekaterina Verbina of Russia 8-3 followed by an 8-0 victory over Meng Hsuan Hsieh of Chinese Taipei.
Veer Dev (freestyle 79Kg), SAJAN (Greco- Roman 77kg), Ravi (Greco- Roman 97kg) and Jyoti (Women 50Kg) lost in Bronze medal bout.
Earlier History of Tournament
India is yet to Won Gold medal in U23 world wrestling championship as India has won Only Silver Medals in this U23 Championship. The first edition of the tournament was played in 2017 in Poland where Bajrang Punia, Vinod Kumar Omprakash and Ritu Phogat was three silver medallist.
In second edition, Indian Wrestler could only manage to get one Medal, Ravi Kumar was the only one to finish on the podium. He also won Silver medal. Ravi Kumar recently Qualify for Tokyo Olympics after winning Silver medal at Senior World championship.
