The Asia and Africa Olympic Qualifier for Tokyo 2020 started today at an intense pace in Mussanah, Oman with all competitors getting the full schedule of racing in light wind conditions.
More than 100 entries from more than 20 nationalities from Asia and Africa are registered for the event. At stake here at Mussanah, Oman are 1 place each for the 49er, 49erFX, RSX Men, RSX Women and two spots each for Laser Standard and Laser Radial
A total of 19 Indian are talking part in Mussanah Open 2021 across 6 qualifying events. The event will be the continental qualifier to compete in six classes of Olympic sailing. At stake here at Mussanah, Oman are 1 place each for the 49er, 49erFX, RSX Men, RSX Women and two spots each for Laser Standard and Laser Radial..
Decent day 1 for Indian Sailors
In he 49er, Indians team of Ganapathy Kelapanda Chengappa and Varun Ashok Thakkar is in fourth position below two Chinese and one South African team. Indian team ended with 18th point after first 3 race while top place china is with 7 points. Only 1 quota is available in this event. Other 2 Indians team are placed below at 11 and 12th place.
In 49er FX Class, Indian team of Ekta Yadav and Ritika Dangi finished day 1 at 3rd place . Indian pair had excellent 3rd race where they finish on top but as a result of their 3rd and 4th place finish in Race 1 and 2 they are currently 3rd with 8 points. China lead currently with one first place and two second places finishes and the Thailand team follow them in the second. Here also quota will be given to Top rank team.
Most important event for India Laser Radial, in which two quota are lined up India's Harshita Tomar is currently at 2nd place with 6 points behind Jung Hyewon of Korea who is just point ahead of Tomar. Top rank player in this event Nethra Kumanan is currently at 4th place . She started well in race 1 where she finished 2nd behind Jung but could manages to finished 7th in race 2 . Still a long way to go as total 10 race followed by Medal race is still there and Nethra has decent chance to go on the top. Nethra in 2019 became India's first world Cup medalist.
In the RSX Women Philippines leads after two races and is followed by Singapore and Ishwariya Ganesh of India who are tied for 2nd position . Only 3 entries are there in event with one quota up for grab. In RS:X Men Class Ebad Ali is on 5th place with 10 point while top positions are occupied by Thailand and Philippines.

Format of races and point system
Total 12 races will be there in 49er, 49erFX, RSX Men, RSX Women while Laser Standard and Laser Radial will have 10 races. After 12/10 races top 10 will move to medal races. Among all 12 races best 11 ( similarly among 10 best 9) races will be considered along with Medal races for points and sailer with lowest point will won the overall race.
Point will be awarded on the basis of rank in race like if one sailer finishes 1st he will get 1 point , 2 for 2nd place finish similarly 10 for 10th place finish. And after all the races sailer with lowest points will win the event .
If a person Disqualify then he will get one more point then total player in that event .like if there are 12 sailer and Nation / Sailer disqualify then he will get 13 points in that race.
