Indian Cyclists Won 9 medals including 3 gold at 5th Track Asia Cup 2018

The 5th edition of Track Asia Cup 2018 organised by Cycling Federation of India started off at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium. Participants from 12 countries compete in this cycling event which is not only the qualifying event for World Cup and World championship, but also for 2020 Tokyo Olympics. 2020 Olympics Track cycling qualification is done entirely through UCI nation rankings.



Indian Cyclists Won 9 medals including 3 gold at 5th Track Asia Cup 2018. India secured three gold medals, three silver and a bronze along with India’s medals, SAINCA which competed separately, won one silver and a bronze. SAINCA is Sports Authority of India’s National Cycling Academy.

Junior Event at Track Asia Cup 2018

Point Race – Bilal Ahmed Dar opened India’s tally with a Silver in Point Race of 15km. He earned total 19 points to bag the silver medal of this race. Daniel Pekhotin of Kazakhstan earned 22 points and grabbed the Gold. Venkanpa S Kengalgutti of SAINCA’s bagged bronze.

Women Junior 500 meter Time Trail Mayuri Lute won the gold medal in the 500-meter time Trail She outrun Thailand’s rider clocking 37.538s while Thailand’s rider Kanyarat Hnokaew clocked 38.470s to win Silver. Kazakhstan’s Alyona Abramchuk won Bronze with 38.628s. Mayuri runs with a speed of 47.95 km/hr.





Mayuri said after winning the Gold medal that “There was no pressure on me and I enjoyed the race. This is a good exposure championship for us, I’m thankful to Cycling Federation for organizing this regularly.”

Team sprint – India men’s junior team defeat the Kazakhstan team. Esow, Abhishek and Jemsh Singh of India clocked 46.804 s while the Kazakhstan team took 47.747 s for the finals.Indian junior team is ranked second in the UCI rankings.

The secretary general of Cycling Federation of India Mr. Onkar Singh, said that he is satisfied with the performance of Indian team on the opening day of Track Asia Cup 2018. He is hopeful about India securing the championship.

Senior Event

Women 500 meter Time Trail – Sonali Chanu had to satisfy with bronze, behind two Indonesian cyclists. he finishes with 37.140 s.

Women Elite Team Sprint – India’s M. Sonali and Deborah obtained silver after clocking 35.100 s. Indonesian team won the gold medal with a timing of 34.862 s. Hong-Kong obtained bronze in this event. This is the second medal for Sonali after her time trail Bronze only on day 1 of the championship.



Men Elite Team Sprint – Sahil, Sanu Raj and Apolonious of India secured silver with a timing of 47.103s. Indonesian team again come on top after clocking 45.848 s. SAINCA Indian second team was relegated for causing a crash of opponent in this event. Bangladesh comes third to win their 1st medal of this championship.

Men Pursuit Team Sprint – Indian team won the gold medal In the Men Elite Team Pursuit event, while SAINCA and Bangladesh got silver and bronze respectively.

RK Sharma Indian Coach said After the conclusion of day 1 of Track Asia Cup 2018, “We are blessed as World Cycling Satellite Centre is here in Delhi and all the required facilities are available here. Our athletes are doing well in Asia as well as on World level, we are confident to win some big International medals for the country.”
