  • India’s both men & women team reach Quarter-finals of Badminton Asian Team Championship 2018.
  • Women team lost their final group W match to Japan by 1-4.
  • Men team will face Indonesia later.

Indian Women Team finished second in group W with one win and loss each, where as Men team will play Indonesia in their last group stage match, which will prove as a dead-rubber as both teams are assured of Last 8 stage.

Women’s Team

6th seed Indian team lost their 2nd & last group stage match to Championship favorites & Top seed Japan by 1-4. In the opening rubber Indian Open Runners Up P.V Sindhu got the better of 2nd Rank Akane Yamaguchi in straight sets 21-19 21-15 to provide India a crucial 1-0 lead.

But after the Sindhu’s win it was a pure surrender from Indian team. Going into the tournament without London Olympics medalist Saina Nehwal, World 67th ranked Priya kudaravalli took the field against higher ranked Sayaka Sato in the second rubber of the tie. It proved to be an easy encounter for the Japanese as she won the match easily in straight games by 21-12, 21-12 to lock the tie at 1-1.

In 3rd rubber India played a gamble by putting Double’s Player Ashwini Ponnapa on the court against 16th ranked Aya Ohoro in place of Ruthvika Shivani who won deciding tie for India in first match of the Asian championship. Ashwini, who won a single match against higher ranked singles player in Premier Badminton League, couldn’t repeat her heroics & lost in straight games 14-21, 12-21.

In women’s doubles encounter, Sanyogita Ghorpade / Prajakta Sawant lost in straight games to 6th ranked Pair of Japan’s Shiho Tanaka / Y.Koharu by 17-21 17-21. By this time Japan had an imperishable lead of 3-1.

In last Dead rubber India’s top doubles pair Sikki reddy and Ashwini Ponnapa lost to world no.2 pair of Misaki Matsutomo / Ayaka Takahashi by 18-21 18-21.

Despite the loss, India qualify for the quarterfinal stage of Asian Badminton Champion 2018, as top two teams in the group qualify for the next round. Earlier India won against HONG KONG on opening day of Championship by 3-2.

Men’s Team

BWF Dubai Finals 2017

Indian men’s team will play their last group match against Indonesian team. Both teams are undefeated so far & defeated Philippines and Maldives by the margin of 5-0. So, the match will be the dead-rubber as both the teams have qualified for the next round but this match will decide the topper of Group D .

Srikant Kidambi, Sameer verma and Sai Praneeth will play the single’s where as in doubles India have 3 pairs to put their bets on.

It will be exciting to See whether India will experiment with Arjun M.R / Ramchandran Shlok or bring their top 2 doubles pair of Satwiksairaj RANKIREDDY / Chirag Shetty and Manu Atri/Sumeeth Redyy against strong Indonesia.

As per as our view, Srikanth is most likely to play Jonatan Christie (rank 14), while Sai Praneeth will be up against higher ranked Ginting. There’s little to separate Sameer Verma (No 41) and Ihsan Mostafa (39) .

India’s doubles pairings will face an uphill task against the pros, but the singles is where India will need to put the Indonesians under the pump.
