Indian young pair cause a Huge upset, stuns World no.9 to enter first ever Super Series QF young pair cause a Huge upset, stuns World no.9 to enter first ever Super Series QF

Indian young men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty stole the show by beating World no. 9 pair to book their first ever spot in the quarter-finals of any Super Series event.

The World No. 39 duo put up a swashbuckling performance to oust the seventh seeds and World No. 9 Chinese Taipei combine of Lee Jhe-Huei and Lee Yang, 23-21, 16-21, 21-8 in 52 minutes.

The victory was a noteworthy result for the much-maligned Indian doubles teams, with 17-year-old Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and 20-year-old Chirag Shetty combining to produce a breakthrough victory over a top-ten pair for the first time in their fledgling careers.

The pair proved to be the second Taiwanese feast for the Indians in as many days, with Rankireddy and Shetty having shown Lee Sheng Mu and Lin Chia Yu the exit door on Wednesday with a convincing 21-9, 22-24, 21-12 triumph.

This is their maiden appearance in the quarter-finals of any Superseries tournament and is surely a big achievement for Indian doubles. The fast-rising pair climbed to the India No. 1 position briefly this year before Manu Attri and Sumeeth Reddy wrested it back from them.

The pair of Rankireddy and Shetty who moved from the qualifiers will next take on the Japanese third seeds Takeshi Kamura and Keigo Sonoda for a place in the semi-finals.
