India’s Best Medal Prospects in Tokyo Olympics 2020

Summer Olympics 2020 is scheduled to take place from 24 July to 9 August in Tokyo, Japan. Indians had won only 2 medals in the previous edition of Summer Olympics. India are very desperate to improve the medal tally in Tokyo. So far Indians athletes have qualified for the games in archery, athletics, hockey, shooting and wrestling.



Let’s look at the top medal prospects for India in summer Olympics 2020

1. Saurabh Chaudhary (Shooting):

This teenage sensation is amongst the top contender for gold in 10m air pistol and mixed team in 10m air pistol. Saurabh has been performing consistently since his junior days in global level.Saurabh has won his quota with world record score of 245.0 in issf world cup held in New Delhi. Saurabh recently won silver at Asian shooting championship.

Saurabh chaudhary and Manu bhaker have also qualified for mixed team air pistol competition they have been in a fine form win four golds in ISSF world cups. Considering their both forms they strong contenders for medals in both individual and team events.

2. Bajrang Punia (Wrestling):

Bajrang Punia is world no 1 in 65 kg freestyle wrestling,a student of Yogeshwar Dutt a former Olympic medal winner.He has won gold in both Asian games and Commonwealth Games in 2018. He has been in a form of his life since then. He also won bronze medal in world championship held in September 2019. As india won medals in wrestling in last two Olympics Bajrang will hope to make it hat trick medal for india in wrestling.

3. Neeraj Chopra (Athletics):

Neeraj chopra has been out of competitive action for the past one year still he has been considered one of the medal contender for india in Tokyo 2020. India have not won a single medal in track and field event in athletics so far in Olympics. Neeraj has won gold in world junior championship in 2016. He has also won gold in both Asian and commonwealth games in 2018. Neeraj threw a distance 0f 88.06 to win gold in Asian games which is the national record for India in javelin throw. If Chopra find his form again a silver or bronze is reckoning.



4. Amit Panghal (Boxing):

Amit Panghal is the first indian boxer to reach a final of AIBA world championship in history. Amit Panghal showed lot of class during in games before landing some crucial punches showing that he belongs to the highest level .The 24 year old has also won Asian games in 2018. Amit also sounds confident that he can win India the exclusive gold in summer Olympics 2020.

5. Vinesh Phogat (Wrestling):

Vinesh phogat is the first indian wrestler to qualify for Tokyo Olympics 2020. From being stretchered off after suffering a knee dislocation during her quarterfinal bout at the 2016 Rio Olympics to winning her maiden World Championships medal in 2019, Vinesh Phogat has again risen to become India’s biggest medal hope in the sport at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

She has been great shape winning gold in both Asian and Commonwealth games 2018.

6. P.V. Sindhu (Badminton):

P.V.Sindhu is a silver medallist in Rio Olympics 2016. She will be keen on putting a good show Tokyo 2020 to go one step forward. Sindhu became the first indian to win BWF SuperSeries final in 2018 held in China and she won world championship 2019 beating Nozomi Okuhara in straight sets. As she has habit of doing well in big games she is definitely a prospect to win a medal for India in Tokyo.



7.Mirabai Chanu (Weightlifting):

Mirabai Chanu is the one best weightlifters in world at present. Mirabai had disappointing campaign in Rio Olympics however she came back stronger and won gold medal in World Championship in 2017 and Commonwealth Games 2018,she also finished at 4th place in World Championship in 2019. If she is fully fit and in good form, then she has a good chance of win the medal in 2020 Tokyo Olympics

Some underdogs who might swing a surprise in Tokyo 2020

Kidambi Srikanth (Badminton):

Srikanth lost his form in 2019 after a very successful year before that , he was unable to find his rhythm back if could bring his form back he could be one of the best prospect Men’s singles. He has a good defence and strong smash in the World badminton.

Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy (Badminton):

These two have been doing wonders in World badminton in 2019. They first indian pair to be ranked 7 in World badminton ranking. They have improved a lot in last 2 years and have been one lethal pairs in 2019 as Olympics is less than a year away and with same form the pair can go all the way to win a Olympic medal to swing in surprise.



Deepak Punia (Wrestling):

20 year Deepak Punia won gold in World Junior Wrestling Championship ,also he also reached the final in senior World Championship to win the Olympic quota before pulling out of final due to injury. He is regarded as one of the underdog for India in wrestling.

Apruvi Chandela (Shooting):

Having the experience 2016 Olympics, Apurvi Chandela has won two gold medals in ISSF World Championship and has been in good run. She is consistent in her performance and ranked in top 5 in 2019 ISSF ranking.

Men Recurve Team (Archery):

Men Recurve team has won silver medal in 2019 World Championship with very good score. Hard training with good coaches can make them good bet for medal in 2020 olympics
