After the disappointing loss of HS Prannoy, kidambi Srikanth brings glory to nation after a thrilling win over current World no. 1 Son Wan Ho of South korea at $100,000 Indonesian Open Super Series.
However, it was indeed a tough job for the Singapore Open runner-up as Son Wan had 4-2 record against the Indian and won their last four meetings but this time kidambi had other plans.
Srikanth made his way into the semis by 21-15 20-22 21-16 win over fourth seed Denmark’s Jan O Jorgensen in the pre-quarters & straight sets win over Tzu Wei in the quarters respectively.
Former China Open Champion kidambi seems to have find his form back as he defeats the World no.1 in a three setter nail-biting encounter by 21-15, 14-21, 24-22.
In the first set, kidambi was quick to take the lead and grab some back to back points to lead World no.1 by 7-4, at the break Indian lead Son Wan by 11-6 & had no problems after that to take the first game by 21-15 against the reigning Asian Champion.
Second set saw Son Wan Ho came back strongly into the match & gave much more fight to kidambi with his fast-paced game. At the break Kidambi was ahead by 11-10 but couldn’t capitalise on it as his smashes were finding the net often & that was making him more desperate & irritating.
Son Wan Ho won seven straight points to come into the lead from 10-13 to 17-13, which cost kidambi the game & the match was stretched into decider.
In the deciding & third game, the korean found his way back & was leading initially by 3-1 but Srikanth fought with his heart out to level the things at 10-10. The see-saw battle continued after the break & both the players were at even at 19-19 but it was korean who got the match point but failed to convert it. kidambi comes back into lead after that & in the third time of asking he concludes the game & match by 24-22.
He will meet Japanese Qualifier & World Ranked 47 Kazumasa Sakai who notched up a great victory against another Indian HS Prannoy in another intense encounter.
