The day belong to India at Seamaster 2017 ITTF World Tour Platinum Australia Open as the two low ranked qualifiers Sanil Shetty & Sathiyan Gnanasekaran win against the odds & caused first round Men’s Singles upsets.

While it was curtains for Harmeet Desai as he lost to Japan’s Maharu Yoshimura, the no.12 seed (11-7, 11-6, 16-14, 11-8), as status anticipated but Sanil Shetty beat Korea’s Jang Woojin, the no.13 seed, (11-9, 3-11, 12-10, 11-3, 6-11, 11-8) and Sathiyan Gnanasekaran accounted for Chinese Taipei’s Chen Chien-An, the no.14 seed (11-6, 4-11, 1-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-9).

Moreover, the duo of Sanil Shetty & Sathiyan Gnanasekaran also won their respective match in the Men’s Doubles category to reach the Quarter-finals.

The wins for the Indians were also special if we take previous results into consideration; in 2014 on the ITTF World Tour in Sweden, Jang Woojin had beaten Sanil Shetty in four straight games, the same result as had been recorded last year when Chen Chien-An had overcome Sathiyan Gnanasekaran in Korea.

Sanil Shetty is on a dream run as he has beaten players who last year had won ITTF World Tour Men’s Singles titles. Jang Woojin won in Belarus; the previous day in the qualification stage, against the odds, he had accounted for Finland’s Benedek Olah, the winner in Nigeria.

Men’s Doubles

The duo of Sanil Shetty & Sathiyan Gnanasekaran reach last 8 after defeating the Australian pair by 12-10, 7-11, 11-7, 11-6.

However, the experienced pair of Anthony Amalraj & Harmeet Desai lost their respective match to Chinese Taipei pair in a close encounter by 11-5, 11-6, 7-11, 8-11, 7-11.

Women’s Doubles

The pair of Pooja & Sutirtha reach Quarter-finals after their opponent from Chinese Taipei gave them a walkover. Another Indian pair of Manika Batra & Madhurika lost to much higher ranked Japanese pair by 8-11, 13-11, 3-11, 8-11.
